Ortho-Bionomy FAQ What is Ortho-Bionomy?
Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, noninvasive system of healing which is helpful in addressing many physical and emotional conditions. Developed by Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls, a British osteopath, Ortho-Bionomy supports the self-correcting capacity of the person through the use of gentle movement and positioning of the body, as well as light compression into the joints in order to facilitate the flow of energy and deeper relaxation. Ortho-Bionomy stimulates long-lasting changes by reeducating the client's body so that it can effectively maintain balance and optimal function on its own.
What conditions can Ortho-Bionomy assist with?
Because of the gentle nature of Ortho-Bionomy, this work is very helpful for many different types of problems and conditions. Among the conditions that Ortho-Bionomy can assist in balancing are:

Injuries
  • Joint injuries and dysfunction
  • Muscle pain or injury
  • Whiplash trauma
  • Repetitive strain injuries
Chronic Pain and Conditions
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Migraines
  • Ongoing pain not alleviated or addressed by conventional treatments
  • Adjunctive therapy with treatment for cancer
Structural Imbalances
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Post surgery rehabilitation--especially with joints
  • Scoliosis and kyphosis
  • Leg length discrepancies
Autoimmune Disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Thyroid imbalances
Stress-Related Symptoms
  • General aches, pains or fatigue
  • Disrupted sleep patterns
  • Physical conditions associated with emotional imbalances (e.g., depression, boundary issues, trauma)

How long is a session?
Typical Ortho-Bionomy sessions last approximately an hour including the intake and assessment interview, treatment, and post-session self care exercise identification.
How many sessions will it take?
The number of sessions necessary will vary greatly depending on how long a condition has been going on, the seriousness or intensity of the condition, other related conditions and how quickly your body responds. It is usually recommended that an individual receive two to four sessions to assess how his or her body responds and to identify whether additional sessions would be beneficial or whether simply continuing with the self-care exercises would be sufficient. In general, the longer one has experienced a specific condition the more sessions may be required to help the condition resolve. Consult with your practitioner to determine what the best course of sessions will be appropriate for you.
How often should I have a session?
Usually it is best to receive no more than one session per week. This allows the body enough time to integrate the neurological and physiological stimulation from the session. Occasionally it may be beneficial to have a couple of sessions in a row if there is some acute injury or condition which is being presented. During the initial stages of recovery there can be a large amount of change occurring and additional sessions can help to integrate those changes more efficiently.
Are there any conditions that cannot be addressed with Ortho-Bionomy?
Ortho-Bionomy is not used in place of any condition which requires urgent medical care such as broken bones, life threatening injuries or serious neurological traumas. However, after standard medical treatment has been initiated Ortho-Bionomy can be used to assist with integration functionality back into the body. Ortho-Bionomy is also not used directly with blood clots, inflamed tissues, tumors or broken bones. The primary contraindication for the use of Ortho-Bionomy is anything that causes pain. As long as the condition can be worked with comfortably we can use Ortho-Bionomy techniques.
What happens during an Ortho-Bionomy session?
While working with the fully clothed client the practitioner explores the stress, injury or trauma patterns in ways that are physically comfortable for the client. Instead of manipulations or deep tissue work, our focus is to support the self-correcting patterns that the individual is presenting during the session. After a thorough intake both the client and the practitioner work together to identify these patterns of imbalance and stress. The practitioner usually works with the client on a bodywork table, but he may also work with the client seated or standing. Using both verbal and nonverbal feedback the client and practitioner monitor the releases and changes. The practitioner supports the physical and energetic patterns of the client and facilitates the client's re-patterning during the session. Ortho-Bionomy techniques range from the purely physical to the purely energetic. This allows the practitioner to employ techniques which are appropriate for each client. An Ortho-Bionomy practitioner will incorporate some or all of the following techniques into a session:
  • positional release
  • range-of-motion exploration
  • isometric and isotonic techniques
  • rocking
  • static holding
  • subtle or minute movements
  • work in the energy field with the hands off the body
  • cranial balancing
  • visceral balancing
  • neurolymphatic balancing
The practitioner does not use any movements, compression, traction, positioning or physical contact that would lead to injury or exacerbation of any conditions or symptoms which the client may be experiencing. At the end of the session, the practitioner identifies self-care exercises for the client to do after and between sessions to continue the releases and to reeducate the body in its new patterns. Clients are encouraged to receive two to four sessions initially, after which an ongoing program of self-care and/or individual sessions can be developed.
When should I seek Ortho-Bionomy treatment?
Ortho-Bionomy sessions can be started at any time as long as any urgent medical condition has been addressed. In the case of injuries it is ideal to get a session as soon as possible in order to facilitate the healing processes.
Can Ortho-Bionomy help with long-term conditions?
Ortho-Bionomy can be quite effective with long-term conditions. Because we focus on structural reeducation, long-term holding and compensation patterns can be shifted to allow for greater functionality and structural efficiency. Self-care work is especially important for working with long-term conditions.
I'm currently receiving medical treatment and/or using other modalities of treatment. Will Ortho-Bionomy interfere with those other types of treatments?
While Ortho-Bionomy is effective as a stand-alone modality, this work is highly complementary to any other treatments that the client may be receiving. This work does not interfere with any other modalities or protocols and does not force the client to "choose" between traditional and adjunctive therapies. In addition to gaining greater ease of movement and relief from pain and discomfort, clients become more proficient in noticing their body messages enabling them to more readily monitor the responses to the treatments they are receiving and to participate in their healing processes.
I don't have any injuries or long-term problems. Can Ortho-Bionomy still be helpful for me?
Yes! In fact, regular Ortho-Bionomy sessions will help your body maintain its optimal ability to function, deepen your capacity for relaxation, and, because Ortho-Bionomy works by supporting your structural alignment and orientation, regular sessions can be effective for injury and stress prevention.
